Much has been written about the world famous French designer Philippe Starck: about his reclusive nature, his super-luxurious lifestyle (as he used to say: “I work alone and I speak to nobody. I have no distractions – no telephone, no computer and no mistress. I work 14-18 hours a day and my only contact with the outside world is my wife. I am the king of concentration. When you concentrate you can create anything in the world.”) and more about his creations. His yachting creations emerged after a rich career in architecture and design: from creation of several emblematic objects in the late 70’s including a floating lamp and a portable neon sign, to audacious decor for Parisian night clubs through collaborations with the biggest design manufacturers in Italy – Driade, Alessi, Kartell – and the world – Drimmer in Austria, Vitra in Switzerland and Disform in Spain, Philippe Starck is always where nobody is expecting him. In 1983 Philippe Starck was discovered by the general public when, on the advice of Culture Minister Jack Lang, President François Mitterrand chose his project to decorate the private residence at the Elysée Palace. It symbolised an institutional recognition of design.
Philippe Starck’s vision is essential: heralding the phenomena of convergence and dematerialisation, he aims straight for the heart, highlighting the essential, extracting the structural minimum of every object, in order to offer creations and propositions closest to Man and Nature, best adapted to the future. Inventor, creator, architect, designer, artistic director, the French superstar is certainly all of the above, but more than anything he is more than a designer. Just look at MOTOR YACHT A (Blohm+Voss 119m) who splashed in 2008 and was a symbol of a new age of design (one of the earliest examples of the reverse prow), symbol of minimalist elegance. Philippe Starck dreams of solutions so vital that he was the first French man to be invited to the TED conferences (Technology, Entertainment & Design) alongside renowned participants including Bill Clinton and Richard Branson.
Superyacht creations form Philippe Starck include very challenging and divising design for the industry, like SAILING YACHT A (Nobiskrug 142.81m) inspired by the most famous pirate ships, or the extremely sharped VENUS (Feadship 78m) characterized by a notably large proportion of glass.
