Imperial: What is your background and how did you get involved in yachting?
Olivia Ridings: I began my yachting career at the age of 19, having just completed my A-Levels in my home town of Bath, UK I started my first ever full time job as an office assistant. I realised quite quickly that there must be more to life than 3 years at University followed by a 9 to 5 office job. I felt a bit stuck which is when I decided to do some research into travelling jobs. Having looked into a few different options I realised I would be perfectly suited to a position on board a super yacht, having worked in hospitality since I was 16. Since I started in the yachting industry back in 2013, I haven’t looked back since.
IY: Your main skills and why are they suited to the industry?
OR: I have always had a strong background in hospitality; having been in the service industry all my life, I know what people look for and want out of an experience. I have always had good attention to detail and take joy in giving people the best possible service. Combining this with my skills in beauty therapy I feel that my skill set is perfectly suited to cater for our guests needs on board.
IY: Your experience whilst on boats to date?
OR: I started in the yachting industry in 2013 as a Stewardess. Since then I have worked on five different motor yachts varying from 50-75m. After my third year in the industry, I took a short break to complete my Level 3 in Beauty Therapy. I then decided to bring this qualification back into the yachting industry, which has allowed me to carry out the finest quality beauty treatments to client on and off yachts.
IY: Have you always been in the same role?
OR: I completed my first 3 years in the industry as Stewardess and my fourth as stewardess/Beauty Therapist.
IY: Favourite charter destination and where would you like to visit next?
OR: The most amazing place I have visited on a yacht so far is probably The British Virgin Islands, the climate and the water are so beautiful. I would love to visit French Polynesia or maybe the Philippines.
IY: What are the treatments offered on board and what do you hope to offer to future charter clients?
OR: On board LILI, we offer a wide range of aesthetic treatments as well as well-being, including Manicure, Pedicures, Facials, Body wraps and scrubs as well as massage.
IY: Why is the environment of a charter yacht ideal for a health and wellness retreat?
OR: A charter is the perfect environment for relaxation. As crew, we cater to our clients every need, which means that hopefully they won’t have to worry about a thing. Offering treatments on board helps our guests to experience an even deeper relaxation, this in turn will help our clients to switch off and enjoy their holiday to its greatest potential.
IY: Where are your top Mediterranean locations for enhancing relaxation?
OR: I would say Italy and Sardinia are great for relaxation, away from the hustle and bustle of the south of France. It is a great place to kick back, relax, and enjoy the spectacularly beautiful surroundings.
IY: Why would you recommend charter guests have dedicated spa therapists or masseuses on board?
OR: I think it’s a great service to offer on board, it goes hand in hand with the overall relaxation of being on board a yacht. It also offers a nice contrast to the activities that we offer such as water sports and fishing. After a busy, active day out on the water, there is nothing better than coming in for a deeply relaxing massage or a lovely facial.
IY: What sets LILI apart from any previous vessels you have worked on?
OR: LILI is a great size to charter, it has enough room that it’s comfortable but not so small that you feel claustrophobic. It is perfect for clients that like to get involved with activities but appreciate their privacy too.
IY: Best part of the job?
OR: Being able to visit some amazing locations with the crew who basically become your adopted family!
