Project Nova by Heesen

THE ULTIMATE SILENT SUPERYACHT

Following the delivery of Galactica Supernova this year, Dutch superyacht builder Heesen revealed a new project ready for construction called Project Nova. At 50m, the superyacht is being built with the Heesen fast displacement hull configuration. This all-aluminium superyacht project is a good example of Heesen’s approach to yachting: a high performance, comfortable, reduced environmental impact vessel, with an elegant design package with exterior lines by Omega Architects and interior styling by Sinot Yacht Design.

Project Nova’s exterior design is a break from Heesen’s customary design traits, so much so that she is almost unrecognisable as a Heesen superyacht. The design brief presented to Omega Architects was to liken the project to a beach villa with lots of glass.

On the technical side, Heesen has also introduced a hybrid propulsion system, which results in virtually silent cruising, by adding two water-cooled CD electric shaft motors of 127kW each. Heesen revealed the first renderings of this ultra-silent yacht during the 2015 Monaco Yacht Show. Project Nova boasts a fast displacement hull with vastly lower fuel consumption: constructed in light aluminium, she will be powered by relatively small engines for its size – twin 600kW MTU 12V 2000 M61s. With a particular attention to weight control, Project Nova is predicted to achieve a transatlantic range of 3,750 nautical miles while cruising at 12 knots, with a maximum cruising range of 8,000 nautical miles at 8 knots.

Smaller engines mean the yacht will also be more spacious, with less room taken up by the engine room. Heesen added: “The result is unique: a high-performance, supremely comfortable displacement yacht with reduced environmental impact.” Other priority of this project: silence, the ultimate luxury. Heesen said that Project Nova should measure only 50 decibels in the owner’s suite while underway, and when using hybrid mode at nine knots, the noise will measure just 46 decibels in the owner’s suite. “The owner and guests will enjoy a vastly quieter environment,” said Heesen. To put this in perspective, 46 decibels is the sound of soft rainfall.

Project Nova is scheduled for delivery in summer 2017, and we congratulate the Dutch builder for this new milestone in their history.
