A yacht charter holiday in the American Northeast is all about seasonal contrasts, iconic cities and timeworn elegance. From the vast scale of the world’s largest lakes to the characterful intimacy of Newport’s well-to-do waterfront, New England’s natural splendour is well met by its historical pungency and its modern energy. With its mountains and its oceanic shoreline; its vineyards and its colonial antiquity; its multicultural influences and its sophisticated A-list island resorts, this yachting hotspot provides an authentic and multifaceted American charter experience. The historic six-state charter region of New England is positioned at the top end of America’s Atlantic east coast. Built upon the historical influx of immigrants and known as ‘The Birthplace of America’, its 5,000-mile coastline continues to lend a rich colonial backdrop and an authentic American flavour to any yacht charter holiday. It’s a place of weather-boarded buildings, old lighthouses and heritage docksides; of seafood chowder and blueberry pie; a place where Atlantic excitement, idyllic vineyards and rugged mountains come into dynamic union. As an inland yacht charter destination, the Great Lakes is without parallel. Comprising five interconnected freshwater lakes on the border between Canada and the US, this charter venue boasts a range of shorelines, offering everything from rural isolation to urban clamour. America’s agricultural Midwest is not famed for its big-ticket attractions, but the lakes radically invigorate its appeal with vast dunes, long silver beaches and more than 35,000 islands over 94,000 square miles of unique yacht charter playground.
At the most southerly point of New England, between New York and Boston, sits Rhode Island. It is far and away America’s smallest county and yet, with a 400-mile coastline and an infrastructure tailored toward high-end yachting, its fame as the ‘Ocean State’ is well earned. Providence, the capital city, is renowned for its fearless chic and the charter town of Newport offers wonderfully accessible beaches and a highly developed sailing scene. Though its roots are in commercial fishing, the fun-loving destination of Nantucket Island, 40 miles east of Newport, should also be on every yacht charter hit list, particularly for those keen on Atlantic surfing or partying with the international jetset; and the plush, gentrified island of Martha’s Vineyard is another favourite among New England’s well-heeled hedonists.
With volatile autumn storms and a reputation as a wreck-diving hub, the lakes are best viewed as inland seas. Lake Superior’s Royale National Park Island, for instance, is so large that in addition to resident populations of moose and wolves, it has its own internal set of lakes. Major lakeside cities like Minneapolis, Detroit, Toronto, Cleveland and Buffalo offer plenty of ways to tailor your charter itinerary, but Michigan’s central position, with rapid access to four of the five lakes, makes it a great yacht charter base. From here, you can sample the upmarket yachting resorts of Charlevoix and Petoskey; the glistening, beach-intensive State Park of Traverse City; the curious inland surfing sites at New Buffalo; the prolific seasonal beach festivals of Milwaukee; and the effortlessly cool urban diversions of Chicago.
